A facelift, technically known as a rhytidectomy (from the Greek, meaning removal of wrinkles), is a fascinating procedure. According to recent statistics, facelifts were the 6th most popular cosmetic surgery as recently as 2011. According to Wikipedia, the first facelift was performed in 1901 by Eugen Hollander in Berlin, Germany. Skin grafting was one of the technologies later developed that become important to the facelift; ironically both World War I and World War II contributed to a dramatic increase in surgical knowledge, and after World War II more and more people began to be interested in cosmetic surgery, including facelifts.
The facelift operation continued to evolve, albeit slowly, with no break throughs until the 1960’s when T. Skoog from Sweden as well as a number of Americans changed the facelift to include deeper tissues and a new description of the deeper tissues (the SMAS) instigated originally by Paul Tessier, MD of Paris, France.
One of the more interesting articles on the history of the facelift was written in New York magazine, which you can read about here: history of the facelift.
Selecting the Best Surgeon for a Facelift
These days there are many options for facelifts. You can use a big chain that rolls out facelifts, you can go to a cosmetic surgeon or to a plastic surgeon. Even amongst San Francisco’s cosmetic surgeons, there are many choices.
The history of the facelift as a procedure may be important, but what is more important is your own personal history. What type of skin do you have? What is your facial structure? What is the best surgical strategy to complement your natural beauty? These questions reflect your own personal history and structure, and a good facelift surgeon will customize his surgery to your individual needs.
So, in sum, while the history of the procedure is important – even more important is your personal relationship with your surgeon.
