IPL stands for Intense Pulse Light. It is a very popular treatment that uses a range of wavelengths of light to target brown and red discoloration of the skin, including sun spots, small veins, rosacea, and other forms of skin abnormalities.
Treat Multiple Conditions:
The photofacial IPL process is a revolutionary procedure that helps heal a variety of skin ailments including sun damage and age spots, rosacea, and facial veins. Similar to laser procedures, photofacial IPL uses a pulsed light laser to clear:
- Sun Damage: Wide areas of pigmentation on the face, chest, and arms.
- Sun Spots/ Age Spots: Individual pigmented lesions.
- Rosacea: General inflammation of the cheeks and face.
- Facial Veins: Individual veins on face, which can be red, blue or purple in color.
When we perform photo-rejuvenation in our San Francisco office, we are able to treat a variety of areas including the face, neck, arms, legs, back and chest. The only area that is not safe to treat is the skin immediately surrounding the eyes.
The main advantage of using pulsed light technology over laser is that it enables us to treat a larger surface area. This wider coverage generally results in quicker treatments and fewer follow-up appointments. During your appointment, Dr. Rabinovich will use specialized handpieces to filter light from varying parts of the spectrum best suited to treat conditions such as sun spots and facial veins.
As the pulsed light is emitted to the skin, the light is absorbed by the pigment that causes the skin ailment and converted to heat. This heat soon dissolves the cells that create the undesired skin condition, and the healing process begins.
The procedure is safe and painless. As the pulsed laser light is emitted, patients usually experience a mild sensation to their skin. Afterwards, you may feel as though you have a mild sunburn on the affected areas, which generally lasts no more than 24 hours and can be alleviated with cold packs. Generally, several treatments are required to achieve the desired results. Exposure to sunlight should be avoided for several days.
